After spending a week living it up on a “yacht” (more like small catamaran) all over Croatia, we needed a break. While we had gained some amazing friends and a lifetime of memories we had also lost our (1) voices (2) countless hours of sleep and (3) the ability to withstand one more sub par boat shower. And so, we set out for Oia in Santorini.
It was just what we needed. Santorini is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, approximately 200 km southeast of the Greek mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago. It’s two most distinctive characteristics are its (1) gorgeous and (2) romantic.
First, the gorgeous.
Santorini looks just like Instagram would have you believe: whitewashed cube-like houses fitted into the cliffside, cerulean blue domes, cobblestone streets and stunning views of the sea.
The weather is perfect every day and people are happy.
It’s ridiculous. You wake up every day feeling like you’ve been transported back in time to some heaven-like city in a remote corner of the earth. There is no better place to get that R&R. It’s rejuvenating just to wake up somewhere so beautiful.
Second, the romantic.
When you walk around Oia, you feel like babies are being made all around you, all the time. My friends and I were the only non-couples in Oia. Everyone else was staring longing into each other’s eyes, holding hands, and eating candlelit dinners. They were either getting engaged, on their honeymoon, or celebrating a wedding anniversary.
Oia’s famed sunsets, delicious food and wine, and lack of anything to do at night other than procreate may be to blame.
We finished the trip by spending an incredible afternoon eating hummus and seafood pasta by the breathtaking pool at the Grace Hotel.
Bottom line: go, preferably as a couple.
