Koh Phi Phi: same same, but different

Koh Phi Phi  pronounced pee pee (yes, I find this amusing) is a mix between Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Widely known as a party island, it’s in the beginning degenerative stages, but not as dirty as the party parts of Koh Phangan. It’s extremely touristy and extremely busy. I will remember it for the following four things:

1. The first island to offer raspberry and blueberry shakes and mind-blowing pizza on every corner.

2. The booze cruise, which was a ton of fun. We took a boat to monkey island, kayaked in a cave and went to Maya Bay. Apparently the Maya Bay beach is in a Leonardo DiCaprio movie called “The Beach.” We drank the LBW special “donkey punch” which is a mix of gin, white rum, vodka, and grape, orange, apple, and pineapple juices. Tasted dangerously like candy.

3. So many delicious bakeries. Coconut bread is my new favourite thing Image may be NSFW.

4. An annoying eye infection, potentially from eyelash extensions. Almost all the girls in the group got eyelash extensions because they are about 10 times cheaper to get here than back home. Unfortunately, some of us got eye infections shortly after.

The night life here was significantly better than Railay, and every night is a party night with rooftop bars like Banana Bar playing old school hip hop, and clubs like Slinky’s and Dojo playing dubstep and electro music. Slinky’s had a mechanical bull, which was a major hit with some of the LBW crew. There is even a rock n’ roll bar with an excellent cover band playing everything from Nirvana and Guns N’ Roses to Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Koh Phi Phi embodies the “same, same but different” slogan that’s everywhere in Thailand. Essentially, it means everything is the same: the restaurants, the stores, the beautiful beaches, but they are all slightly different at the same time.

Case in point, shopping in Phi Phi feels like one of those dreams where you’re walking in a loop and everything feels both familiar and strange. Every store looks like a hipster explosion with high-waisted denim cutoffs, crop tops with feather motifs, tank tops with naked girls and celebrities, and an endless amount of fringe, studs, and neon. Yet inexplicably, even though every store is the same, there is always that one item you saw in that one store five identical stores earlier that you just can’t find again. Same same, but different.
