Clik here to view.We left the cerulean waters of Phi Phi behind to spend three nights relaxing at a beach front resort on the creatively named Long Beach in Koh Lanta. Listening to the waves hit the shore while getting an oil massage in the parlor right outside my door, I marveled at how awesome Thailand is and how lucky I am to be experiencing it. Our resort was also attached to the Freedom Bar, a reggae bar with excellent music, jenga, connect 4, and hammocks.
The second night in Lanta we sped into the city on rented scooters. Our spontaneous city excursion led us to an excellent restaurant for dinner where I had steamed fish with lemon and then to a fair with more food than I had ever seen. One half of the fair was all kiddie rides: Ferris wheel, little bumper cars and the usual fair games and fair food, like cotton candy and popcorn. Then there were the Thai food stalls. Stalls selling fried chicken, sushi, Pad Thai, and chicken satay were right along stalls selling bagfuls of fried maggots, grasshoppers and what looked like gigantic cockroaches.
Although I am adventurous when it comes to trying new food, eating a creature that feasts on dead human bodies just did not appeal to me. Instead, I tried deep fried mussels and some rainbow custard filled dumplings.
The next day was a trip day. We took a boat to four different locations. The first was morakut cave, a famous pirate cave. Decked out in life jackets and led by a couple of lonely flashlights we swam through the cave, which was pitch black at times, full of poisonous shells and other tourists. The slightly scary cave swim was worth it once we swam out into the stunning lagoon. Yet another thing crossed off the bucket list.
After the cave we snorkeled, then had lunch on the beach and then snorkeled some more. I swam through a school of electric blue and yellow fish.
The next day we set out on the 16+ hour journey to Kanchanaburi!
